As with Granada, León was also founded by Fransisco Fernádez de Cordoba in 1524 at the foot of the volcano Momotombo. In 1610 Momotombo caused a horrifc earthquake that totally destroyed the original city and the modern day city is now situated 32km away. Another Nicaraguan Colonial city, León was the country’s capital until 1857, when Managua was given the title.
