Granada, founded in 1524 by Fransisco Fernádez de Cordoba is one of Nicaragua’s oldest colonial cities along with León. Situated in the shadow of the now dormant volcano, Mombacho, and on the shores of the world’s second largest freshwater lake (Lago de Nicaragua or Lago Cocibolca), Granada is a welcome break for wheelchair users with it’s semi-pedestrianised main tourist drag and smooth surfaced central square.
The tourist area of the city is fairly level and many of the streets are in good condition. There are still the typical hexagonal paving stones on many streets but they are relatively well kept which makes wandering around the city much more pleasant. Although still under construction, the semi-pedestrianised street (Calle La Libertad) from Parque Colón (the central square) will eventually reach the church, Iglesia de Guadalupe and Calle La Calzada which continues down to the lake.
There’s much more to come, please pop back in a few days!
